How does online therapy work?

We offer convenient online therapy sessions via secure video conferencing, connecting with families nationwide.

Our engaging sessions use interactive tools and activities, adapted to each child's needs and learning style.

We incorporate movement, mind breaks and enjoy the flexibility of taking sessions outside or to other parts of the home/school. We are experienced in adapting to diverse learning styles.

We also value and encourage the participation of parents/carers in sessions as we acknowledge the important role we have in coaching and upskilling the adults to ‘be the hands of the therapist’.

What should we expect during the ‘First Link’ appointment?

During the initial appointment, we’ll conduct a comprehensive (assessment) interview with the parent/carer to understand your child’s strengths and challenges within the framework of your family and the community.

The aim is to gather relevant, background information about your child so that we have a starting point for planning therapy. We’ll also discuss your family’s goals and develop a personalised plan to support your needs. In this appointment, we’ll be able to answer any questions you have about our practice and how we conduct telehealth therapy sessions.

This appointment lasts approximately 1.5 hours and you are then sent a copy of the summary notes.

How will I make my child sit still for the whole session?!

At LinkSPOT, we pride ourselves on flexibility. We certainly do not expect your child to sit still throughout an entire session! We like to keep things interesting, offer variety, move around the home, run sessions outside - all of this helps facilitate engagement and cater to the individual needs and interests of your child.

We have experience in working with children online and we utilise a variety of strategies to keep children engaged including (but not limited to): incorporating movement/brain breaks to aide regulation needs; following a child’s lead and interest areas; theming activities around a child’s special interest area, creating visual plans/schedules to support understanding of expectations for the session; allowing choice within therapy activities; and using screen share and remote control for various games, activities, shared videos and book reading.

For very young children and toddlers, a parent coaching approach may be more suitable. We are passionate about educating and upskilling parents/carers about how they can support their child’s developmental needs.

How often will we meet for therapy?

The frequency of sessions varies based on individual needs, goals, funding and personal capacity. We typically recommend weekly or fortnightly sessions, however we’ll work with you to create a schedule that fits your family’s lifestyle and capacity.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes! Research shows that online therapy can be just as effective, if not more effective than in-person therapy, especially when it comes to building rapport and engaging clients. In fact, many families prefer this method of delivery. As experienced therapists in this field, we have seen this firsthand and believe wholeheartedly in its effectiveness.

It’s important to remember that children feel most safe and comfortable within their natural environments. This is one of the big benefits of telehealth - we bring therapy to you. Building rapport with our clients’ parents/carers is equally as important as the relationship we develop with the child. An open, trusting relationship is crucial to ensure the best outcomes for the child. Both the research and our personal experiences have found that we are able to build rapport and connections just as effectively with families through the screen. In fact, it often allows us great insight into their daily lives.
